Every wedding has its own personality, and Andrew and Isabel’s celebration at Honeysuckle Tea House was a reminder that the best weddings aren’t all the same.
Although it was a spring wedding, temperatures climbed into the upper 90s, making the day feel much more like the middle of summer. Even with the unexpected heat, family and friends gathered outdoors, excited to celebrate Andrew and Isabel as they began their new life together.
A Beautiful Ceremony on a Spring Day
Andrew and Isabel exchanged their vows outdoors, surrounded by family, friends, and the natural beauty of Honeysuckle Tea House.
The unusually high temperatures created one unexpected challenge. After spending the afternoon in direct sunlight, my ceremony computer overheated just before it was time to play Andrew and Isabel’s recessional song.
I had music playing again within about 90 seconds using a backup source, but by then they had already made their way back up the aisle. It was a reminder that outdoor ceremonies require planning for the equipment just as much as the people, and it’s something I’ve planned for differently ever since.
Fortunately, that wasn’t the end of their recessional song’s story.
Cooling Off Before the Celebration Continued
Cocktail hour took place upstairs inside the tea house, giving everyone a chance to cool down, enjoy some refreshments, and take a break from the unusually warm afternoon before heading back outside for dinner.
After dinner, Andrew and Isabel decided to handle table photos a little differently. Rather than visiting each table, they invited every table to join them on the dance floor.
As everyone gathered around, we played Married Life from Up, the recessional song they had originally planned for the ceremony. Instead of becoming a moment shared by only a few people at the end of the ceremony, it became something every guest experienced together.
A Fresh Take on a Wedding Tradition
Andrew and Isabel also put their own spin on the traditional anniversary dance.
Instead of inviting married couples onto the dance floor and gradually narrowing it down to the couple who had been married the longest, they invited guests out based on how long they had known them.
Friends from childhood, classmates, college friends, family members, and even guests who had only met them that day all found themselves sharing the dance floor together before the evening continued.
A Celebration That Found Its Own Rhythm
Open dancing got off to a great start with plenty of energy on the dance floor.
As the evening continued, the celebration naturally settled into a different rhythm. Guests spread out across the lawn, caught up with friends, and enjoyed the beautiful setting while singing along to many of the songs Andrew and Isabel had chosen for their day.
Rather than trying to pull everyone back onto the dance floor, I adjusted the music to fit the way the evening was naturally unfolding. More of the sing-along songs Andrew and Isabel had selected found their way into the mix, and they were exactly what the moment called for.
At the end of the night, Andrew came over to thank me and shared something that has stayed with me ever since.
He told me they had spent much of the evening sitting on the lawn with friends, singing along to the music and simply enjoying being together.
That was exactly what they wanted from their wedding day.
