A great school dance has to work for two different audiences. Students need music they actually want to hear, while teachers and administrators need an event that stays appropriate, organized, and easy to manage.

I work with school staff ahead of time to understand your expectations, then mix live and respond to the students once the dance begins. From elementary school dances and middle school events to homecoming and prom, the music and approach are adjusted for the students who are actually in the room.

Music Students Actually Want to Hear

You can’t always predict what students will respond to based on their age. Current music is part of the mix, but older songs can suddenly become popular again through TikTok and other trends. Music from movies, TV shows, games, and other parts of pop culture can become just as important depending on the group.

That’s why I don’t build a playlist ahead of time and simply work my way through it.

Student requests are welcome, both before and during the dance. Even when I don’t play every request, they give me a better understanding of what that particular crowd wants to hear.

From there, I mix live, watch how students respond, and adjust throughout the event.

School-Appropriate Without Killing the Party

Every school has its own expectations for music, and I work within the guidelines you establish.

I use radio edits or cleaner versions of songs when appropriate, but I also understand that a radio edit doesn’t automatically make every song acceptable for every school. If there are songs, artists, lyrics, or subject matter you don’t want included, we can address that before the event.

Schools can also collect student requests ahead of time. That gives me valuable information about what students want while giving your staff an opportunity to review requests and identify anything you don’t want played.

The goal is simple: give students music they’re excited to hear while staying within the boundaries your school has established.

Elementary School Dances, Middle School Events, Homecoming & Prom

Different school events need different approaches.

An elementary school dance may include current favorites, popular movie music, activities, and plenty of interaction between students, families, and staff. A middle school dance can have its own completely different energy. Homecoming and prom often bring larger crowds, longer dance periods, special announcements, court presentations, and other planned moments.

I don’t try to make every school event look or sound the same. The music, pacing, and approach should fit the students and the event you’re actually planning.

More Than Just the Music

School dances often have more happening than just dancing.

Your event may include announcements, homecoming or prom court, raffles, contests, performances, introductions, activities, or other scheduled moments. Let me know what’s planned ahead of time and I can work those moments naturally into the event.

Teachers and staff can be part of the fun too. A request from a favorite teacher or the right song to bring the staff onto the dance floor can create some of the biggest reactions of the night.

When something needs to happen at a particular time, I’ll work with the person in charge so everyone knows when it’s ready to begin.

A DJ Who Can Adjust

A school dance can change quickly.

A song everyone expected to be huge might not connect. Students may start requesting something completely different. An activity might run longer than expected. Or a particular style of music may suddenly take over the dance floor.

That’s where live DJing matters.

If something isn’t working, I can change direction. If the students are responding to something, I can stay with it. And if a request opens up a completely different direction for the dance, I can follow it.

The music responds to the students who are actually there instead of being locked into a predetermined playlist.
