Burlington NC Event DJ | Third Annual Jogging for Josh 5K

A Meaningful Morning in Burlington

I had the honor of returning for the third annual Jogging for Josh 5K in Burlington, North Carolina. This was my third consecutive year DJing the event, and every year it continues to be one of the most meaningful community events I am part of.

The weather was chilly, but perfect for the runners. Families, supporters, sponsors, and participants gathered early in the morning as music filled the start and finish area before the race began. Events like this always have a different kind of energy. It is competitive for some runners, emotional for many families, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire morning.

This year’s event featured 76 runners in the 5K along with a one mile fun run that brought out a lot of kids and families from the community.

Music That Helped Tell Josh’s Story

One of the most personal parts of the morning was the music itself.

Joshua Dane Hughes loved music, especially alternative rock and 80s music. His parents shared the Spotify playlist he left behind, and throughout the race and post-race activities I played many of the songs he loved most. It added a very personal connection to the event and helped make the entire morning feel like a celebration of Josh’s life and personality.

Before the races began, Dennis Fields, owner of Talon Medical Construction, performed the National Anthem at 8:45 AM. The one mile fun run started at 9:00 AM, followed by the 5K at 9:30 AM.

During the fun run, I shared a story about Josh that perfectly reflected his dedication to fitness and running:

“Known for his dedication to physical fitness, Joshua always had his favorite running shoes in tow. Once, Steven came home to find Joshua was not at home. Later, when Joshua arrived home Steven asked him where he had been and his response was with a loving smile, ‘I just ran 10 miles after walking 5 miles.’”

A Race Route Filled With Meaning

One of the most meaningful parts of the course comes near the turnaround point, where runners pass close to the cemetery where Josh is laid to rest.

Steven and Juanita place balloons at his gravesite that can be seen from the race course, creating a quiet reminder of who the day is truly about. It is a small detail, but one that makes the event feel deeply personal for everyone involved.
