Every swim season deserves a celebration, and for the Willowhaven Wave, that celebration comes at the annual team banquet at Umstead Pines. After months of practices, swim meets, championships, and countless hours at the pool, swimmers, coaches, families, and friends gather one last time before summer comes to an end to recognize the accomplishments of the season and celebrate everything they’ve achieved together.

This year’s banquet had even more to celebrate. After earning a promotion to Division 1 of the Durham Summer Swim League, the Willowhaven Wave completed its first season competing against the league’s largest teams. Along the way, the team set twelve new club records, while the boys relay team captured the championship and added another club record to cap off an impressive season. Every swimmer contributed to the success of the team, making this a season worth remembering.
After families had taken their seats, the swimmers made their entrance to AC/DC’s Thunderstruck, bringing an energetic start to the evening before the awards presentation began. Dinner was followed by recognition for swimmers of every age, celebrating individual accomplishments, personal growth, and the hard work that had gone into the season. The banquet concluded with the annual highlight video, giving everyone an opportunity to relive the memories from another unforgettable summer in the pool.
When the video ended, the focus of the evening quietly shifted.
As volunteers began clearing tables to make room for dancing, the music changed with it. Upbeat classics filled the ballroom while the room transformed, and before everything was even ready, a few of the younger swimmers had already found their way onto the dance floor. It didn’t take long before teammates, siblings, coaches, parents, and friends joined them, turning the banquet into one final celebration together.

Just a few songs later, one of the team’s favorite traditions made its appearance. Around Umstead Pines, “U.P.” has long been part of the club’s identity, making DMX’s Up in Here a song the swimmers look forward to hearing every year. The moment it played, smiles spread across the dance floor, and from that point on the energy never slowed down.
For the next two hours, the ballroom stayed full of music, laughter, and dancing. The youngest swimmers danced alongside graduating seniors. Parents stepped onto the dance floor instead of watching from the sidelines. Coaches joined right in, familiar line dances brought everyone together, and before long a conga line was winding its way through the ballroom.
Looking around the room, it was easy to see that the evening had become about much more than awards and records. It was a celebration of friendships built throughout the summer, goals that had been achieved, and a community that had spent another season cheering one another on.
At 11:00, the final song came to an end and the lights came back on. An audible groan spread across the ballroom, a sure sign that nobody was quite ready for the night to end. After celebrating an unforgettable season together, it was the perfect way to close another summer with the Willowhaven Wave.
