When the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences closes to the public each evening, a different kind of experience can begin. Chris and Rachel celebrated their wedding in the museum’s Nature Exploration Center, one of the two buildings available for private events. From exchanging vows beneath Acro, the museum’s Acrocanthosaurus skeleton, to ending the night with a packed dance floor in the very same atrium, every part of the evening flowed naturally from one chapter to the next.
A Ceremony Beneath Acro
Guests began arriving at the museum around 5:30 before making their way to the third floor for the ceremony in the John B. McMillan Science Atrium, home to Acro and better known as Dinosaurs in the Dome.
With seating on the exhibit floor limited, additional family and friends watched from the fourth-floor observation gallery overlooking the atrium. Early in the ceremony, the officiant invited Chris and Rachel to pause and take in everyone who had gathered to celebrate with them, including those watching from above. It was a simple but meaningful moment that made every guest feel included in the ceremony.
Following the ceremony, guests stepped into the museum’s Prehistoric North Carolina gallery, where glowing fiber-optic wands created a tunnel for Chris and Rachel’s grand exit. Capturing the send-off before cocktail hour gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy the rest of the evening without worrying about missing one of the day’s signature moments.
While Chris and Rachel finished portraits around the museum, guests headed upstairs to the fourth-floor café for cocktail hour, a natural transition that allowed the atrium to be transformed for the reception.
The Reception Begins
As cocktail hour came to a close, the wedding party gathered near the elevators before being introduced into the atrium through a tunnel of family and friends. Chris and Rachel were introduced last, and as they entered the atrium, guests followed behind them, gathering around the dance floor to watch their first dance as husband and wife.
Parent dances followed before everyone stepped just outside the atrium for dinner. Throughout dinner, heartfelt toasts celebrated the newlyweds before guests made their way back into the atrium for the final chapter of the evening.
Opening the Dance Floor
Instead of simply inviting everyone onto the dance floor, Chris and Rachel had one more surprise planned.
As AC/DC’s Thunderstruck echoed through the atrium, they stepped onto the overlook above their guests for a T-shirt toss that had everyone looking up, laughing, and reaching for shirts. Before anyone had a chance to scatter, the photographer gathered everyone together for one large group photo from above, capturing the celebration from a perspective that only the museum could provide.
The moment the group photo ended, Michael Jackson’s P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) filled the atrium, officially opening the dance floor for the rest of the night.
From that point on, the energy never slowed. Friends and family packed the dance floor beneath Acro, celebrating together until it was time to bring an unforgettable wedding day to a close.
Chris and Rachel found a wonderful way to make the Nature Exploration Center part of their celebration, using its spaces not just as a backdrop, but as part of the experience itself. From the ceremony beneath Acro to a dance floor full of family and friends just a few hours later, it was a wedding that reflected their personalities from beginning to end.
