Pool Party Playlist Ideas

During the summer, I spend a lot of time DJing around pools, and one question comes up all the time:

How do you build a great pool party playlist?

The answer depends on two things. How long you are playing, and who you are playing for.

At places like Umstead Pines Swim & Golf Club, the crowd is always a mix of ages. You have kids, teens, young adults, parents, and grandparents all sharing the same space. That means your playlist has to keep everyone engaged, not just one group.

The easiest way to do that is to think in mini sets.

Instead of jumping randomly between songs, group your music into 30 to 45 minute blocks. For a pool party, I typically let songs play longer and keep things more relaxed. That usually comes out to about 10 songs per set.

This is very different from how I DJ a wedding or a packed dance floor, where I mix quickly and move through a much higher number of songs per hour. Around the pool, the goal is not constant high energy. It is creating a vibe that people can enjoy while swimming, talking, and relaxing.

A simple structure that works really well looks like this:

Start with current hits. These don’t have to be strictly Top 40, but they should be songs people are hearing right now. This gets the younger crowd engaged early.

From there, shift into beach music or Carolina shag. This is perfect for a pool setting and almost always gets the older crowd involved.

Next, move into an 80s set. These songs are familiar, upbeat, and bridge the gap between generations.

Then circle back to more current music to bring the energy back up.

After that, a country set works well, especially in North Carolina where it connects with a wide audience.

Follow it with a 60s and 70s throwback set. These songs are timeless and great for a relaxed summer vibe.

Then finish out with more current and high-energy tracks as the event continues.

One of the most important parts of any pool party playlist is taking requests. It helps you discover new music, but more importantly, it helps you connect with the crowd and keep people engaged throughout the day.

There’s no single perfect playlist. The best ones are flexible, read the crowd, and keep the energy moving without leaving anyone out.
