It was great to be back at The Villas at Culp Arbor in Chapel Hill for another neighborhood event. After DJing their summer pool party last year, I was excited when the social committee invited me back, this time for a sock hop.
The Villas at Culp Arbor is a 55+ community that knows how to have a good time. The sock hop theme brought plenty of 50s and 60s favorites into the mix, but the music didn’t stay in one era for long.

Returning to The Villas at Culp Arbor
One of the things I enjoy about returning to the same community is already knowing a little about the people in the room. I knew this group enjoyed dancing, making requests, and hearing music from across the decades.
That made it easy to let the event develop naturally rather than treating “sock hop” as a strict musical boundary.
Music Across the Decades
We started with plenty of music that fit the theme, including Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Supremes, and The Temptations. As the afternoon continued, the requests and the dance floor took us well beyond the 50s and 60s.
We moved through disco, 80s favorites, line dances, and newer music. That variety worked because the residents weren’t interested in simply listening to songs from one period. They wanted to dance.
That’s one of the reasons I don’t make assumptions about what people will enjoy based on age. The people in the room will usually tell you what they want to hear if you’re paying attention.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the line dancing. A resident who regularly leads line dances in the community had given me several songs ahead of time. When those songs came on, she got everyone up and moving together.
The line dances weren’t exactly part of the traditional sock hop theme, but that didn’t matter. They were part of this community’s celebration, and that made them a perfect fit.
As the afternoon continued, the requests kept coming and the dance floor stayed active. By the end of the event, the music had traveled through several generations while still keeping the spirit of the sock hop that brought everyone together.
Community Events That Bring People Together
Events like this are a reminder that the best music isn’t always about staying inside a theme or a particular decade. It’s about paying attention to the people in the room and giving them opportunities to enjoy the event together.
I was honored to be invited back to The Villas at Culp Arbor and look forward to seeing what the social committee comes up with next.
